Grants Pass, Ore. (May 16, 2013) — Dutch Bros. Coffee and the communities it serves banded together on May 3 to “Drink One for Dane,” raising a record-breaking $271,579 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in honor of late company co-founder Dane Boersma.
Surpassing last year’s donation total by nearly $100K, the amount will be distributed to local MDA chapters where Dutch Bros. Coffee stands are located. Dutch Bros. Coffee has donated $896,581 to MDA since becoming involved in 2007.
“The Muscular Dystrophy Association is extremely grateful to Dutch Bros. and all their customers who came out to ‘Drink One for Dane’ and for the thousands of families living with ALS,” says MDA Executive Vice President and Chief Business Development Officer Kevin Moran. “Dutch Bros. Coffee’s partnership with MDA has helped provide invaluable local services for those living with ALS and has had a tremendous impact on research to find treatments and, eventually, a cure for ALS.”
Travis Boersma, surviving company co-founder and brother to Dane, says, “I’m touched that, every year, our customers bring even more support and love for an organization that means so much to me and affected families everywhere.”
All 198 Dutch Bros. Coffee locations in seven states donated proceeds that day, and kindhearted customers overwhelmed donation jars.
Dane was diagnosed with ALS in 2005 and passed away in late 2009. His memory continues to inspire everyone within the company to give their all and love people every day.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world leader in fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a disease that affects the parts of the nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. There is no cure for ALS, and most people with ALS die within three to five years. Medford, Ore. (May 15, 2013) – For an entire week, May 20 through May 26, all 19 Dutch Bros. Coffee locations in Jackson County will donate $1 from every water sold to help pay for medical expenses for Logan Rock, a 26-year-old Eagle Point High School alum who recently learned he has testicular cancer.
Logan, older brother to Dutch Bros. barista Erica Rock, learned about the cancer about six weeks ago after going to the doctor for a lump. Doctors found a tumor on his testicle and tumors in his stomach and lungs.
“I wish I could take it, and I can’t,” says Erica. “He’s trying to stay strong, just focusing on the day-to-day tasks and not the long run he’s going to have.” Logan has already had one surgery and faces another surgery and two months of chemotherapy.
Funds raised will go toward helping Logan pay for medical expenses, which are only about 60% covered by insurance. They will also aid with general living expenses that Logan will need help with during the six months he can’t work his job as a manager at the Eagle Point Ray’s Food Place.
“This way he won’t have to worry about finances and can just focus on getting better,” says Erica. “When my manager told me Dutch Bros. is doing this, I broke down crying. It meant so much.”
Erica says her customers who know about Logan’s battle are offering amazing support as well. “I’ve had a few that have added him to prayer lists at their churches and some have dropped off money. It’s completely shocked me and brought me to tears.”

“Logan is a good person who deserves this so much,” says Erica. He’s really strong; if anyone can do it, he can.”
